On this day 30 years ago, the Criminal Assets Bureau was established as an independent statutory body by enactment of the Criminal Assets Bureau Act 1996. Its establishment followed the murders of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe and journalist Veronica Guerin in June 1996, and we remember in a special way their families today.
This particular year not only marks a significant milestone, but it illustrates how the Criminal Assets Bureau has evolved as an agency, returning over €251 million to the Exchequer since its inception.
We can attribute the success of our story to the support of our agencies and staff who have brought us safely to this day, but especially to you, the general public, who have trusted us to carry out our statutory remit.
The Bureau is committed to denying and depriving assets acquired through criminal conduct.
